A cupola, whose root base means “small dome” in Latin, is not only an aesthetically pleasing addition to most any post frame constructed building or ranch style home, but it also has a few practical purposes as well. Most people think that cupolas are merely decorative, and their only function of any note is to hold a weathervane, but this is simply not the case.
How Cupolas Help Control Ventilation
Originally, cupolas served as lookouts. However, it was soon discovered that they were extremely valuable for ventilation control. Science teaches us that warm air rises making cupolas perfect for fresh air circulation within the structure.
Not only will this make the temperatures a little more bearable in the summer, but the resulting lower humidity will eliminate moisture damage, rot, mold, and other harmful conditions that can deteriorate a horse stall or other post frame structure over a period of time.
Cupola Size Guidelines and Products
The standard rule for cupola size is easy to remember. Typically, for every one foot of roof ridge line, you will need one inch of cupola. Cupola Limitations
Although effective for ventilation and air flow, cupolas are not designed to be waterproof. In typical applications it would be expected to have some water infiltration. Therefore if using in a residence or building structure where this is important, a cupola should be used only for decorative purposes by installing without penetrating the roof for air flow. Air flow can be gained by using other products such as ridge vents.
